I was hired by the Georgian Embassy to create an illustration for an event invitation. The event—called "Portrait of Georgia"—was held in the beautiful Kogod Courtyard of the Smithsonian Reynold's Center for the 20th Anniversary of the Georgian Independence. The event included projected works by Georgian photographers, a performance by the Georgian ballet, as well as food, music, and dancing for the large crowd that showed up to discover Georgia for a night.
They requested that I somehow combine a drawing of the building itself—the same one that houses The National Portrait Gallery—and the Georgian flag. The roof over the courtyard is quite striking, so I originally tried a different angle that included it. You can see my first 2 sketches below which weren't quite working well enough. We decided on the more straight-on shot of the entrance with the flag behind the columns. They actually do hang giant, narrow posters between those columns, so this wasn't much of a stretch.
